You can't be at every appointment — but you can build a simple system that keeps your parent's health from quietly drifting. Here's the minimum that makes the biggest difference.

The system that works from afar

  • Book an annual health review with their GP — bloods, BP, sugar, eyes, dental — even when "nothing's wrong".
  • Do a medication review at least yearly — older adults often accumulate too many medicines. Keep the list current in the Parent Profile.
  • Ask to join key consultations by video call as the family decision-maker.
  • Keep reports in one place — scans, prescriptions, discharge summaries — so any second opinion is fast.
  • Know the nearest good hospital and how to get there fast — see hospitalisation guide.
  • Sort cover: Ayushman if 70+, plus any private insurance.
  • Watch for the quiet signs — weight loss, falls, withdrawal, confusion — and act early.

Worth Knowing

As a GP, the things that catch families out are rarely dramatic — they're the missed medication review, the untreated infection mistaken for "ageing", the fall no one heard about. A steady once-a-year rhythm of review prevents more crises than any gadget.
